Nantucket Eye Center has been established since 1988

Optometrists are the major providers of primary eye care in the United States. Seventy-five percent of all Americans seeking eye care select an optometrist as their eye doctor. The education of an optometrist includes four years of pre-medical undergraduate education and four years of optometric education, earning a Doctor of Optometry degree. Many graduates then take a residency in specialties such as low vision, geriatrics or primary eye care.  Each year all optometrists must complete required continuing education credits to maintain a license to practice

Optometrists are specifically educated, trained and licensed to be primary health care providers who examine, diagnose, treat and manage disorders of the visual system, the eye and related structures as well as diagnose related systemic conditions as regulated by state law. They are expert in prescribing eyewear and contact lenses

Ophthalmologists specialize in treatment of internal eye disease and in eye surgery. Inter-referral is customary between optometrists and ophthalmologists to provide excellence in eyecare for their patients.
